Djieran, this is my personal experience (not Nick’s). Thanks for taking the time to read the article and to leave your thoughts. Relaxation—both physiological and psychological—has been crucial to developing a new understanding of myself and a new relationship to my body and to the world around me. I used to be a very uptight, easily angered, and overreactive person. My experiences with depression and persistent pain ultimately forced me to change how I respond to life experiences, both good and bad and both mundane and monumental. I learned that whilst I can’t always control what happens to me, I can control how I interpret and react to what happens to me. Often, our reactions, including the stories we tell ourselves, play a much more significant role in our day-to-day happiness (and in the quality of our interpersonal relationships) than does the ‘stuff’ that we go through. Having been so ‘wound up’ for so long, I had to consciously teach myself to be calmer, both physically and mentally. This, alongside the belief that I had the power to drastically improve the overall quality of my life, allowed me to become a healthier person over time.
