I appreciate you taking the time to give me your thoughts on this piece, Niklas! It means a lot to me!
“You don’t need credibility to have a good idea. On any subject or in any field. I sometimes write about marketing and I don’t have any real authority there either.”
Ultimately, I think this is a personal choice that a writer has to make more than it is a question of right versus wrong or appropriate versus inappropriate. I absolutely agree that good ideas can, and often do, emerge independently (or regardless) of the authority or credibility of the person who crafts of them. Indeed, if this weren’t true then an innumerable number of startups would never have got off the ground.
Personally, though, I feel most comfortable writing about ideas and topics about which I consider myself to be an expert — either experientially or academically/professionally. Marketing myself is something I (necessarily) do every day, but given that I’ve learned everything I know about marketing from other people and companies, I’m content to leave the writing about most marketing strategies to the experts.
Having said that, I’m perfectly comfortable writing detailed pieces about specific aspects of marketing I’ve personally crafted and applied — such as the process I’ve used to land clients as a ghostwriter in the tech space.
Thanks again for your insights :)
