With respect to certain phrases looking and sounding ‘off’, I think you’re right to suggest that this impression results from the regularity with which grammatical mistakes are made these days. I had a professor many years ago who refused to let any of the students conflate the singular and plural forms of ‘data’ in their writing or speech and so, naturally, that one appears less ‘wrong’ to me than some others, which I have to force myself to accept as correct.
