I certainly don’t advocate maintaining all relationships at any cost. As you imply, there are times when it makes little sense — whether emotionally, financially, or reputationally — to continue a business relationship given the actions and/or intentions of the other party. As a general principle, we shouldn’t ever allow others to take advantage of our good nature.
