Sending a potential client a piece of high quality and relevant work for free not only demonstrates your skills in a practical way but also signals how eager you are to work with that person or business. I suggest trying to strike an effective balance between doing too little free work (which prevents your potential client from recognizing the value of the service(s) you offer) and offering too much free work (which discourages your potential client from hiring you for paid gigs because you’ve already fully solved his/her problem).
